Friday 6th May, 6.15am and weu2019re back in The Royal Dublin Golf Club for the second round of The Irish Amateur Championship.u00a0 Weu2019re first off at 7.00am which can be a positive, the greens are freshly cut, the bunkers are freshly raked and the road is clear in front.

Itu2019s a strange feeling, there isnu2019t a breath of wind and itu2019s very quiet, not a normal day at The Am.u00a0 We go through our warm up routine and head to the first tee 10 minutes before weu2019re due to play.

The starters are only setting up, but take a moment to greet us.u00a0 7.00am rolls around and weu2019re ready to go.u00a0 A decent drive, not a great strike but straight, a vision of things to come.u00a0 We par the first 3 holes in regulation, we had chances, particularly on the par 5 second but theyu2019re not dropping at the moment.

The par 3, 4th hole is playing as easy as it ever has, 152m in flat calm conditions.u00a0 Itu2019s a perfect 8 iron for us but again itu2019s not perfectly hit.u00a0 Weu2019re left with a very tricky chip over a 3 foot high mound to a green running away from us.u00a0 Gav hits a nice 60 degree but it skids on the wet surface (dew on the ground) and weu2019re left with a tricky 6 footer down the hill.u00a0 He rolls it perfectly and in she goes, itu2019s only a par but weu2019ve made a putt and that always boosts the confidence.

On 5, a weak 9 iron finds the bunker and weu2019ve made a bogey to go 1 over.u00a0 What a time for golf photographer, Pat Cashin, to find us.u00a0 The next is a par 5 so hopefully we can get that one back, but the drive is pushed out of position.u00a0 A good recovery to get us back into position but weu2019re further back than weu2019d like to be.u00a0 Weu2019re starting to feel some wind for the first time today, but itu2019s helping us.u00a0 Another short iron not quite struck out of the middle of the club face and weu2019re short of the green.u00a0 3 putts later and weu2019re 2 over par.

We par the next three holes with regulation 2 putts, none of them short enough to be considered real birdie chances.u00a0 Weu2019ve reached the turn in 2 over par.
